A Christ Filled Life – Getting To Know Jesus
Just looking at a new blog that inspired this thought: Material things do not satisfy our Spiritual Needs.
“Proverbs of Solomon,” XXI, Proverbs 21:17) He that loveth pleasure (or sport) shall be a poor man: he that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich. Quest Study Bible – v17, What’s wrong with enjoying the finer things in life? Nothing. As long as their kept in perspective. God’s Blessing may include the finer things in life (10;22). But this proverb warns against an obsession with pleasure and luxuries. 18) The wicked shall be a ransom for the righteous, and the transgressor (unfaithful) for the upright. 19) It is better to dwell in the wilderness, than with a contentious and an angry woman. 20) There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man spendeth it up. Matthew 25:3. 21) He that followeth after righteousness and mercy findeth life, righteousness, and honour. 22) A wise man scaleth the city of the mighty, and casteth down the strength of the confidence thereof. 23) Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles. 24) Proud and haughty scorner is his name, who dealeth in proud wrath (in the wrath of pride). 25) The desire of the slothful killeth him; for his hands refuse to labour. 26) He coveteth greedily all the day long: but the righteous giveth and spareth not. 27) The sacrifice of the wicked is abomination: how much more, when he bringeth it with a wicked mind? 28) A false witness shall perish: but the man that heareth speaketh constantly (will be destroyed). 29) A wicked man hardeneth his face: but as for the upright, he directeth (or considereth) his way. 30) There is no wisdom nor understanding nor counsel against the Lord. 31) The horse is prepared against the day of battle: but safety (victory) is of the Lord.
Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v18, The righteous is often delivered out of trouble, and the wicked comes in his stead, and so seems as a ransom for him. v24, Pride and haughtiness make men passionate; such continually deal in wrath, as if it were their trade to be angry. v26, (The Slothful) cease not to covet riches, pleasures and honours, which cannot be obtained without labour. v28, The doom of a false witness is certain and whoso listens to him will be destroyed forever. v31, In our Spiritual Warfare we must arm ourselves with the whole armour of God; but our strength must be in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Amen.
