A Christ Filled Life – Getting To Know Jesus
“A Sabbath Rest for the People of God”, Acts 4:1) Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into His Rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. 2) For unto us was the Gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the Word preached, did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it. 3) For we which have believed do enter into rest, as He said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into My Rest: although the Works were finished from the foundation of the world. Psalm 95:11. 4) For He spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all His Works. 5) And in this place again, If they shall enter into My Rest. 6) Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief: 7) Again, He limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time, as it is said, To day if ye will hear His voice, harden not your hearts. Psalm 95:7. 8) For if Jesus had given them rest, then would He not afterward have spoken of another day. 9) There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. 10) For He that is entered into His Rest, He also hath ceased from His own works, as God did from His. 11) Let us labour therefore to enter unto that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief or disobedience. 12) For the Word of God is a twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 1Corinthians 14:24, 25. 13) Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in His sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.
Quest Study Bible – v1, What does it mean to fall short of God’s Rest? God’s Rest is both present and future (3:11). Missing God’s future rest means missing Eternal Salvation. Missing God’s present rest means living a frustrated life of spiritual frenzy. Those who struggle, striving through their own efforts to gain Salvation, have not found rest in Christ. v2, What Gospel did the Old Testament Israelites hear? Gospel means good news. The Israelites in the desert heard the good news of a place of peace and rest from their enemies (Moses) –news about the promised land (Deuteronomy 12:8-10). v11, Is it a contradiction to make every effort to enter that rest? No: This is not a call for human effort to gain Salvation. Rather, it’s a call to focus our faith on Christ’s work, the only means by which we can be saved. v12-13, What does God’s sharp word have do with rest? God’s Word, in this case, is His promise of rest. This accurately describes God’s Word, which, more than letters on a page, is alive with God’s Spirit and Power. This Word of promise judge’s what’s in a person’s heart.
John Gill’s Bible Exposition – v2, as well as unto them or “even as they”; for though the Gospel was preached to the Israelites in the wilderness, in the ministry of Moses, and by types and sacrifices; yet they were not evangelized by it, or brought into a Gospel spirit: however, it was preached unto them; which shows the sameness of the method of salvation in all ages; the necessity of salvation by Christ, and the unity of Christ’s church.v10, For He that is entered into His rest, This is to be understood not of believers, nor into eternal rest, but of the Lord Jesus Christ; for a single person is only spoken of, and not many, as in ( Hebrews 4:3 ) and the rest entered into is His own, which cannot be said of any other; ( Hebrews 4:12-14 ) . Now He entered into His rest, not when He was laid in the grave, but when He rose from the dead, and ascended into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God.
“Jesus, The Great High Priest”, Acts 4:14) Seeing then that we have a Great High Priest, that is passed into the Heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. 15) For we have not an High Priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities, but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Luke 22:28; 1John 3:5. 16) Let us therefore come boldly unto the Throne of Grace, that we may obtain Mercy, and find Grace to help in time of need.
Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v14-16, God sent His Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, Romans 8:3; but the more Holy and Pure He was, the more He was unwilling in His nature to sin, and had a deeper impression of its evil; consequently the more must He be concerned to deliver His people from its guilt and power. *We should be encouraged by the Excellence of our High Priest, to come boldly to the Throne of Grace. Mercy and Grace are the things we need; mercy to pardon all our sins, and Grace to purify our souls. We have boldness to enter into the Holiest only by the Blood of Jesus, He is our Advocate and our Saviour. Amen.
