“Paul’s Farewell to the Ephesian Elders” cont’d, Acts 20:28) Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the Church of God, which He hath purchased with His Own Blood. Ephesians 4:7; Revelations 5:9. 29) For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you; not sparing the flock. 2Peter 2:1. 30) Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away Disciples after them. 1John 2:19. 31) Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn everyone night and day with tears. 32) And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and the Word of His Grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified. John 17:17. 33) I have coveted no man’s silver, or gold, or apparel. 34) Yea, ye yourselves know that these hands have ministered unto my necessities, and to them that were with me. 1Thessalonians 2:9. 35) I have shewed you all things, how that so laboring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the Words of the Lord Jesus, how He said, It is more blessed to give than to receive. 36) And when he had thus spoken, he kneeled down, and prayed with them all. 37) And they all wept sore, and fell on Paul’s neck, and kissed him. Genesis 45:14. 38) Sorrowing most of all for the words which he spake, that they should see his face no more. And they accompanied him unto the ship.
Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v28-38, If the Holy Ghost has made Ministers overseers of the flock, that is Shepherds, they must be true to their trust; the Church the Lord has purchased with His Own Blood. Paul spoke about their souls with affection and concern. They were full of care about what would happen to them. Paul directs them to look up to God with faith, and commends them to the Word of God’s Grace, not only as the foundation of their hope and the fountain of their joy, but as the rule of their walking. The most advanced Christians are capable of growing, and will find that the word of Grace helps their growth. He recommends himself to them as an example of not caring as to things of the present world. It might seem a hard saying, therefore Paul adds to it a saying of their Master’s, which He (Christ) would have them always remember; “It is more blessed to give than to receive”. To the world, clear gain, is the most blessed thing that can be; but Christ tells us what is more blessed. It makes us closer to God, who gives to all, and receives from none; and to the Lord Jesus, who went about doing good. This mind was in Christ Jesus, may it be in us also. Those who exhort and pray for one another, may have many weeping seasons and painful separations, but they will see each other again, before the Throne of God. Amen.
More to come and God Bless You.
