“Jesus, A Miracle Worker”/The Children of Abraham

A Christ Filled Life – Getting to Know Jesus

“The Children of Abraham”, John 8:31) Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on Him, If ye continue in My word, then are ye My disciples indeed; 32) And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.  Isaiah 61:1; 2Corinthians 3:17, 18.  33)They answered Him, We be Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?  Leviticus 25:42; Matthew 3:9.    34) Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.  Romans 6:6, 12, 16, 19, 20.  35) And the servant abideth not in the house for ever:  but the Son abideth ever.  Galatians 4:30.  36) If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.  Isaiah 49:24; Galatians 5:1; Revelations 1:5.   37) I know that ye are Abraham’s seed; but ye seek to kill Me, because My word hath no place in you.   38) I speak that which I have seen with My Father:  and ye do that which ye have seen with your father.  39) They answered and said unto Him, Abraham is our father.  Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham’s children, ye would do the works of Abraham.   Romans 2:28; Galatians 3:7, 29.  40) But now ye seek to kill Me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God:  this did not Abraham.  41) Ye do the deeds of your father.  Then said they to Him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Commentary – v31-36 Because of the power of the Lord’s words, many were convinced and professed to believe in Him (v30). He encouraged them to attend His teaching, rely on His promises and obey His commands, notwithstanding all temptations of evil. Thus doing, they would be His disciples truly; and by the teaching of His word and Spirit, they would learn where there hope and strength lay. Christ spoke of spiritual liberty; but carnal hearts feel no other grievances than those that molest the body and distress their worldly affairs. Speak of the bondage of sin, captivity to Satan, and liberty by Christ; tell of wrong done to their precious souls and the hazard of their eternal welfare, then you bring strange things to their ears. Jesus plainly reminded them, that the man who practiced any sin, was, in fact; a slave to that sin. Christ in the gospel offers us freedom, He has power to deliver us from our sins. v37-40 Our Lord opposed the proud and vain confidences of these Jews, showing that their descent from Abraham could not profit those of a contrary spirit to Him. Where the Word of God has no place, no good is to be expected: room is left there for all wickedness. A sick person who turns from his physician and will take neither remedies nor food, is past hope of recovery. The Truth both heals and nourishes the hearts of those who receive it. Those who claim the privileges of Abraham, must do Abraham’s works; must be strangers and sojourners in this world; keep up the Worship of God in their families and always walk before God.
Nelson’s Compact Commentary – v41 We were not born of fornication: From ancient times this has been interpreted as a sneer, as if to say, “We are not illegitimate children, but You are”. Apparently gossip had followed Jesus for many years, alleging that He had been conceived out of wedlock. What Satan puts into the minds of men ruins their souls.
