A Christ Filled Life – Getting to Know Jesus
The Feast of Tabernacles was a seven day feast celebrated in September or October. It memorialized the journey from Egypt to Canaan and gave thanks for the rich harvest of the promised land, it was a time of great joy. The feast derived its name from the practice of living in tents or booths made of branches during the celebration. Leviticus 23:33-43. Quest Study Bible.
John 7:1) After these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for He would not walk in Jewry, because the Jews sought to kill Him. John 17:1. 2) Now the Jews’ feast of tabernacles was at hand. 3) His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judaea, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest. Acts 1:14; Galatians 1:19. 4) For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, shew thyself to the world. 5) For neither did His brethren believe in Him. Mark 3:21. 6) Then Jesus said unto them, My time is not yet come: but your time is alway ready. Acts 1:7. 7) The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil. 8) Go ye up unto this feast: I go not up yet unto this feast; for my time is not yet full come. 9) When He had said these words unto them, He abode still in Galilee. 10) But when His brethren were gone up, then went He also up unto the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret. 11) Then the Jews sought Him at the feast, and said, Where is He? 12) And there was much murmuring among the people concerning Him: for some said, He is a good man: others said, Nay; but He deceiveth the people. 13) Howbeit no man spake openly of Him for fear of the Jews.
Quest Study Bible Commentary – v5 Yes, Jesus did have brothers that were sons of Joseph and Mary ( Mark 6:3). Having grown up with Him and being so familiar with Him, they found it hard to believe that He was more than a human being. While they couldn’t deny His power, they failed at first to grasp His destiny. They wrongfully assumed He wanted recognition and political advancement. v10 Why did Jesus act secretly? Many influential people hated Him and were trying to kill Him (v1). The more openly Jesus taught, the more intense the opposition would become, and Jesus knew that it was not yet time for Him to die (v6).
Jesus Teaches at the Feast John 7:14) Now about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught. 15) And the Jews marveled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned? 16) Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but His that sent me. Revelations 1:1. 17) If any man will do His will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of Myself. 18) He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh His glory that sent Him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in Him. 19) Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill me? Mark 3:6. 20) The people answered and said, Thou hast a devil: who goeth about to kill thee? 21) Jesus answered and said unto them, I have done one work, and ye all marvel. 22) Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision; (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers; patriarchs) and ye on the Sabbath day circumcise a man. Genesis 17:10. 23) If a man on the Sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the Sabbath day? 24) Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment. Deuteronomy 1:16; Proverbs 24:23.
John Gill’s Exposition – v16 Jesus answered them and said,…. Having heard them express their surprise, and state their objection: My doctrine is not Mine: *it was His, as He was God; as such, He was the author of it, it was from Him, by the revelation of Him; and it was of Him, it was not acquired by Him, as man; He did not learn it of man; He needed no human teachings; He increased in wisdom without them, from His infancy: they said right, in saying He had never learned; the spirit of wisdom and knowledge rested on high, and the treasures of them were hid in Him; * as man; it was not from Himself as such, but it was from heaven, from His Father: wherefore He adds, but His that sent me; thereby intimating, that it was of God, and was communicated to Him by His Father; from whom He received it, and from whom He had a commission to preach it; so that his doctrine was that wisdom which comes from above, and is pure and peaceable, divine and heavenly, and ought to be received by men. v21 I have done one work, Jesus healed the man at the pool on the Sabbath day (John 5).
James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
John Gill’s Exposition – Every good gift and every perfect gift,…. Whether of nature, providence, or grace, and especially the latter; spiritual gifts given along with Christ, or spiritual blessings in Him; every such gift is; the “best” gift; better than those which only relate to the present life: and is “perfect” such as the gifts of righteousness, remission of sins, adoption, regeneration, and eternal life. Amen.
